Mapping the Aussie Summer: We Were Here brings YouTube to the Sydney Film Festival
Thursday, 9 June 2011
What does an Australian summer really look like? We asked you to submit your answers and from Brissie to Broome and everywhere in between, YouTubers responded with hundreds of videos, creating a
map of Australia
through an archive of events, experiences and people. Over the past two months, director Amy Gebhardt worked with
Dr. George Miller
to create a film made from your YouTube videos to put together a unique vision of the Australian summer, as told by you.
This Saturday, the film
We Were Here
premieres at the Sydney Film Festival at 8:35pm EST, and will be available on YouTube at the same time! You can have a sneak preview of the trailer right here:
Can’t get enough YouTube on the big screen?
We Were Here
also premieres alongside
Life in a Day
, the first full-length user-generated documentary, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in
January
. Life in a Day was crafted into a feature film by Ridley Scott and Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald, and chronicles a single day on earth. The world premiere was live streamed right here on YouTube, but it’s also coming to theatres soon.
Have a look at the Life in a Day trailer which has only recently gone live:
Together, these two works represent a new generation of truly radically inclusive filmmaking, pulled together through the help of YouTubers from all over Australia, and all over the world! Come back to
youtube.com/mapmysummer
to watch
We Were Here
, which will be available online for a limited time. And be sure to subscribe to
youtube.com/lifeinaday
for updates on the Australian theatrical release.

Summertime Rolls
Australian Film at Cannes
Monday, 16 May 2011
This is a guest blog post from
Screen Australia
CEO Ruth Harley who is at the Cannes Film Festival. Screen Australia has partnered with YouTube on
Map My Summer
.
This year, the Australian line-up at Cannes is exceptional. A few days ago there was the world premiere screening of Australian feature film
Sleeping Beauty
, which is in competition for the top prize. Written and directed by novelist turned filmmaker Julia Leigh, this is a remarkable achievement for a debut feature film. Described as an unsettling erotic fairytale, it stars Emily Browning as Lucy a university student drawn into a mysterious hidden world of beauty and desire.
Three other films are set to inspire audiences in Cannes. "Toomelah", written and directed by Indigenous filmmaker Ivan Sen will have its world premiere screening in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival and Nash Edgerton’s film "Bear" will appear in the Shorts Competition. "Snowtown", directed by rising talent Justin Kurzel, is also set to screen during International Critics’ Week.
Indigenous cinema storytelling is going from strength to strength. At home, Australian feature "
Mad Bastards
" has just been released in cinemas nationwide. This stunning and heartfelt film, directed by Brendan Fletcher, is set in the wild landscape of northern Aboriginal Australia. It’s received rave reviews and we are incredibly proud of this film at Screen Australia. It is most definitely one to see at the cinema.
In other news, last week we launched never-before-published information about the life cycle of Australian films in a new report
Beyond the Box Office
. The report takes a close look at how Australians are consuming screen media these days.
And finally, we’re thrilled to be collaborating with YouTube in what we think is an Australian first.Screen Australia has commissioned Australian filmmaker Amy Gebhhardt to make a ground breaking short film made with user generated footage from the YouTube
Map My Summer
project. Amy is currently being mentored on the project by legendary filmmaker George Miller and the film is set to premiere at the Sydney Film Festival and on YouTube in June. We can’t wait to see it. For now, check out the latest weekly video blog from the Map My Summer production office with editor Nick Meyers:

Beach House, Used to Be
Coming soon to the big screen: Your Australian summer map
Wednesday, 2 February 2011
Last week we announced our plan to
map the Australian summer
with all your experiences. And you responded with videos around Australia, from racing your pets down a sand dune to surf lessons at the beach.
The map of Australia is starting to take shape, and this week, we’re raising the stakes. You may have caught the premiere of
Life in a Day,
the world’s first full-length user generated documentary. As part of this next generation of radically inclusive creative filmmaking, we’re proud to announce that Screen Australia, in partnership with renowned Australian filmmaker George Miller, will be working with one of the hottest up and coming Aussie directors to turn your summer map into the next great summer film. Only you can answer the question: What does an Australian summer really look like?
Hear from George Miller:
What do you see, hear, and feel about the Australian summer?
We’ve just posted
a summer playlist
with short films from three Australian directors, Ariel Kleiman, Luke Doolan, and Amy Gebhardt, with their own versions of the Australian summer.
One of these directors will be working directly with George Miller to turn your videos into a final film which will debut at the Sydney Film Festival later this year.
What’s more, five members of the YouTube community whose footage is included in the final film will be invited to attend the premiere screening at the Sydney Film Festival.
Ever wondered what the Aussie summer looked like 60 years ago? Here’s one look at our summers past, courtesy of Screen Australia.
To take part in this year’s summer experience, upload your videos from to
youtube.com/mapmysummer
. You have until March 31st 2011 to film and upload. Let’s share the diversity and the extraordinary nature of this Australian summer with the world.

What does an Australian summer really look like?
Wednesday, 26 January 2011
We’re a huge and diverse country - the sun shines in Broome, the rain pours in Toowoomba, the surf’s up in Bryon and the mist settles in the Dandenongs - and our summer is legend. Let’s share our collective experiences of this Aussie summer with the world. With your help, we want to create a map of the Australian summer on YouTube. Starting today, you can upload summer videos to YouTube, creating an archive of events, experiences and people from all around the country.
To take part, upload and follow the instructions to geotag your videos at
youtube.com/mapmysummer
. They don’t need to be fancy; we want to see any footage you’ve captured this summer on your video camera, mobile, or anything else you’ve got.
Roaming through the Australian bush?
Cricket at twilight?
Your stories will generate an Australian map of summer.
To give you some inspiration, we’re also bringing you summer highlights from several of our top partners, including
Tourism Australia
,
Universal Music
, and
Tennis Australia
among others, and each week we’ll be featuring the best of our Australian summer from around the country. This week, check out
a few of our favourites from Sydney Festival
. Be sure to keep coming back to see how we’re mapping Australia through video.
So as you head out this Australia Day, remember: the world is watching! Let’s show them what our summer’s like, and why it’s so special. Start uploading today.
