I think it will be better to have a thumbs up/down system for this reason, however, there are some videos out there which would be better to continue to have the 5 star rating, so have a opt-in to a 5 star system or something like this.
thumbs up only is required. the 'down' is not needed. I use the star system only to tell someone I really like their video - if I don't like it I leave it. Better to encourage people than to discourage them.
It seems I am not the only one guilty of this behaviour. My measure for ratings usually hinges on the question "Do I want others to see this video?"If the answer is yes it gets 5 stars, if not 1. I very rarely rate a video 2,3, or 4 stars. In this situation it is rather pointless to have other star ratings. Also, while channel owners can obtain average ratings in their stats - it's not used in any public facing view. So what's the point?Given this, a simple yes/no rating system will suffice. Although, it should be made plainly clear how many people have rated a video up and down, plus how many views it has had (as this is an indicator of how motivating the video is in either direction). For example, a video with 100 views, 20 up votes, and 50 down will most likely be rubbish, and vice versa.
I'd much rather see the 5 star rating kept than changing to a more simplified thumbs up / thumbs down rating system.
